ABOUT THE PROGRAM: One of the first in the nation, Santa Barbara's Teen Court is part of a national movement. Youth courts across the country intervene for first-time youth offenders by diverting them out of the traditional juvenile system. Teens avoid a criminal record, while still being held accountable for their actions. They present their cases and make up the jury. Most of the functions of this court are carried out by teens, which means they are now seeing both sides of the issue. Having to judge others, they learn good judgment. Sentences include jury duty, community service, counseling and educational classes.

Teens voluntarily plead guilty and accept their sentences  beforehand in order to participate in the program. During the process, they discover why communities best function under the 'rule of law' rather than by the whim of individuals. You will see teens from every background in the courtroom; making mistakes has no race, religious or socio-economic barrier. Talk with Eduardo Cué, Teen Court Program Director, and he will eagerly extol the virtues of the program, citing the overwhelming ratio of successes that Teen Courts here and around the country are documenting.
